Be Inspired / 5 Simple Steps to Look & Feel Younger

As stoic, independent men, we don’t often talk about wanting to look younger. When was the last time your best mate turned to you and asked what your secret was to keeping hold of your charming looks? After all, we harbour this fantastical concept that, as guys, we become more distinguished with age, like a full-bodied red wine…. (step forward Messrs Clooney and Pitt).

We grow up with the notion not to judge a book by its cover. However, we live in a world where first impressions are everything. We are given one face and one body. The earlier you start to take care of them, the better you’ll be in the long run. While you may not be comfortable sitting around the table with your buddies discussing your anti-aging tips to looking younger over a tumbler of whisky on ice, it’s definitely worth keeping a couple of your own tips up your sleeve.

While no one is suggesting you can stop Father Time, there are a few things you can do to slow him down a little.

Make it a pleasure, not a chore. Not only can exercising help with weight loss, increase your energy levels, reduce your risk of chronic disease, improve your memory, decrease your stress and make you happier, but it can also (and here’s the BIG ONE…..) slow down, and perhaps even reverse, the signs of ageing.

Any form of exercise increases your heart rate, which in turn helps blood circulation and delivers more nutrients to your skin cells. The result? Well, it’s that simple - healthier, younger-looking skin! It is also believed to preserve collagen (the stuff that keeps your skin nice and tight) and increase its production.

So turn your dog walk into a “dog-jog”, resist the temptation to take the lift and power up those stairs instead, and start your day with a 5-minute blitz of push-ups, star jumps, lunges and squats. You’ll notice the difference immediately.

If you need definite proof of the powers harnessed by this virescent plant, look no further than the island boasting the world’s highest concentration of centenarians: Okinawa, Japan. In Venice, wine flows like water. In Okinawa, it’s green tea. Chock-a-block with antioxidants and nutrients, green tea works wonders for your complexion. And, with a healthy dose of caffeine, we highly recommend ditching that morning coffee and replacing it with a cheeky cup of green goodness!

Super fruits don’t don capes, hide their real identity or possess super powers (well, the last one is debatable!) but they are called “super” for a reason. Sure, all fruits are good for us, but a select few are so full of brilliance that they get elevated in stature. These gems are jam-packed with antioxidants, fibre, vitamins and minerals, and nutrients that are said to make you live longer and look younger.

Now, every year an incredible new super food pops up on the market that is meant to transform you into a twenty-something-year-old studmuffin. Join the masses and go along with the fad if you like, but we’re going to be blunt and tell you to cut the crap and not waste your time. Stick to the classics. Next time you’re at the supermarket, grab a pomegranate or two, load up on avocados, invest in the goji berry, go crazy for the dragon fruit, don’t be shy with the tomatoes and, if you can get your hands on them, the hallowed açai berry needs to sneak its way into your shopping cart.

Astronauts look for it on distant planets. Gym rats carry around bottles of the stuff. We down as much of it as possible (if we remember) before hitting the pillow after a heavy night out. 60% of our body is made up of it. 70% of our planet is covered in it. This beautiful blue liquid is the source of life. Never underestimate the benefits of drinking water.

Deprived of H2O, your skin will literally shrivel up like a sun-kissed grape. Grab a glass and rehydrate those skin cells. Feeling a little groggy after a long weekend? Reach for a tall boy of water and reenergise yourself. Got the midnight munchies but worried about putting on those pounds? Down a glass and nip that naughty appetite in the bud. Water boosts your mood and brainpower, naturally reduces your stress, flushes out unwanted toxins and helps your body burn fat. Stop neglecting this elixir of life. Don’t wait for your body to remind you it’s time to drink. Stay on top of your game and keep hydrated!

It’s no exaggeration when you hear that fish is food for the brain. Loaded with vital nutrients like protein and vitamin D, fish is also the world’s best source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are incredibly important for your body and your brain. Don’t be put off by the name. They won’t make you fat or corrode your skin. These fatty acids are legendary.  They are said to boost collagen production keeping your skin looking young and healthy and also believed to increase brain activity and elevate your mood.

For those of us lucky enough to live on or near the coast start reaping the rewards of what our oceans have to offer. For the rest of us, find a good old fishmonger and get fish into your diet. After all “in the hands of an able cook, fish can become an inexhaustible source of perpetual delight”.

Let’s face it, who doesn’t want compliments on how fresh and electrifying they look? Order Father Time to visit other guys and come back to you at a much, much later date. It’s time to take matters into your own hands. Roll back the years, look younger and feel younger.
